Dear Nyonyas and Babas
It was very encouraging to hear Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong telling us on 24 March that Singapore’s public health situation has improved. We are also acutely aware that the good news come with the caveat that we must be prepared to step back if COVID-19 resurges.
The General Committee (GC) has, on further deliberation, therefore decided to press on with our earlier decision to have a virtual (online) AGM for the 2022-24 term on Sunday 12 June 2022 at 2pm.
This is to fully ensure our annual meeting will safeguard the wellbeing of our participating members. Equally important, we do not want to have to manage any Safe Management Measures (SMM) uncertainties.
Please look out for our AGM pack which should be making its way to you sometime in mid-April.
This year is an election year and I am pleased to inform that we have formed a team of both experienced and younger members to take the association to what we have set out to do – to inspire the community and our young to reimagine and reinvent our culture.
We faced formidable challenges over the past two years because of COVID-19. But we have emerged stronger and closer as a team. And certainly wiser.
Fortunately, we have been able to adapt successfully to the very inhospitable environment with the support of TPAS members, partners, volunteers and friends.
This year’s hybrid literary festival, the second after the 2019 inaugural festival, was the last “big” event to close the current GC’s term.
Some 140 participants enjoyed the readings and forums that embraced Peranakan and Malay cooking and food anthropology, Peranakan identity and language, historical fiction and through to poetry and pantun.
For the first time too, the festival in Singapore was livestreamed to the Melaka premises of The Bendahari, a cultural hub and a festival partner, which made it the association’s first-ever cross-border event
The two days of the festival were very well received. Unfortunately, on the first day, a system error in a third party’s live-streaming platform disrupted the broadcast of the live event by one-and-a-half hours. We are sorry for it. Fortunately, the attendees appreciated that this was beyond our control.
That same day, we did not hesitate to instruct Peatix to give a full refund of the price of the online tickets to our attendees. Peatix did so the day after and the refunds should be reflected in the statements of credit cards used to purchase the tickets within the next few weeks.
We also plan to post recordings of the festival on our YouTube channel soon.
I quote the festival’s champion and organiser, Nyonya Ngiam May Ling: “At the 33rd Baba Nyonya International Convention in November last year, historian and author Baba Kwa Chong Guan had asked: ‘Can the Baba Nyonya Literary Festival going into its second session in March next year inspire a new genre of Peranakan drama and literature?’ Like Mr Kwa, we hope that this festival will spawn creative writing groups and aspiring writers who write Peranakan-themed texts will emerge from them.”
The GC shares Chong Guan’s and May Ling’s sentiments. Our hope is that literature will be held as a torch to shine its everlasting light on our culture and identity.
Conclusion
I thank, from the bottom of my heart, my fellow team members and their families for their commitment to the Association. I would also like to thank you, our members and friends, our volunteers and partners, for your faith in us and your encouragement during a very trying period. Please continue to support The Peranakan Association Singapore as we aspire to inspire young Peranakans to evolve the culture.
Blessings

Dear Nyonyas and Babas
Two weeks ago, I decided to hike up Bukit Timah Hill. On the way up I paused at a sign that read:
”Let’s enjoy the natural sounds of nature. Only when you keep other noises out, will you allow the sounds of the forest to enter.”
In the cacophony of life, how easily we forget this. Instead, we tend to lose ourselves in the noise.
Sometimes, we need to remind ourselves to be in the quiet.
Only then can we become conscious of and sensitive to what is really happening around us, and what we wish of ourselves.
Being in the quiet makes you a better listener. It hones your patience to get at the facts first and to look at both the big picture and the micro details that matter. It ignites introspection. It disciplines your decision-making process.
And, as we grow older, we temper all this with some compassion and humility.
This General Committee (GC) survived COVID-19 partly because it paused and took stock many times along the way. It was still stressful nevertheless!
My 31 March letter set off a flutter of kind and empathetic emails to me. I am humbled but at the same time encouraged that our members share our concerns for our Peranakan culture and the need to move it forward.
Our culture can only be kept alive, even flourish, if we continue to reimagine and reinvent it.
Yes, we must not forget our traditions; we must continue to respect them.
But we must also understand and accept that it is only natural to let go of those traditions that are no longer relevant to each of us.
This does not mean forgetting them. It is simply accepting that they are no longer relevant or functional in our time and age. This organic and inevitable culling will lead to a much healthier culture. The process is like pruning a plant to let it grow.
It is my hope that the association will continue to receive the support of its members and friends in this challenging endeavour, even as a new GC is elected into office on 12 June 2022.
It is heartening to note that there is growing interest in our culture. And, next year, when the Peranakan Museum reopens in renewed splendour, it will surely give the culture yet another lofty lift.
Equally important, if we can collaborate with our other partners like NUS Baba House or People’s Association to successfully connect with our youths and young adults, it would kindle a positive and more sustainable turning point for the culture.
As Singapore reopens and as we gain confidence to step forward and embrace the new normal, there will be plenty more to do.
Our biggest programming challenge will be to pick up the courage to start organizing physical and social events to bring our members and friends together again.
As you would be aware, we have only had a handful of very limited in-person gatherings in the recent six months out of a nearly two and a half years of COVID-19 since February 2020.
While we are monitoring the situation closely, we have lined up in the pipeline a few physical social events towards the end of this year and through to next year. They include gatherings and tours, subject to any reversal in safe management measures.
We will continue to have virtual (online) webinars as these will still serve their purpose in bringing more people to our sharing sessions.
The pandemic has opened our eyes to the opportunities that virtual webinars alone can engender.
Conclusion
As I step aside after this term, I know I am leaving The Peranakan Association Singapore in the hands of a very capable successor, Nyonya Genevieve Peggy Jeffs. She will have the support of an experienced and equally competent team now freshly infused with much-needed talent, vigor, and new ideas. That is, if they are elected and encouraged by you. I know you will cheer them on and I thank you in advance for that.
May God bless each of you and your loved ones and keep all of you in good health.

Dear Nyonyas and Babas
Three Saturdays ago, Linda and I brought our two chuchu, five and two years old, to East Coast Park’s Cyclist Park.
Braving the blazing afternoon sun, they heroically, and with great fun, did their twists and turns up and down the mild slopes of the park on their three-wheeled kick scooters with their helmets firmly in place.
Soon, a young adult joined them and expertly did jumps on his skateboard. The two boys stopped and watched him, spellbound.
When the skateboarder took a break, I asked him how one would ride a skateboard. His answer, which was unexpectedly reflective, made me ponder:
“Where we are facing is where we are going. Like life.”
So simple, yet so true. In eleven words, he succinctly articulated what Lee Kuan Yew said on 11 December 1965. It was four months after Singapore was cut out of Malaysia and we were in dire straits:
“Thrust forward! Never hesitate to do what we know to be right. And if in the end we do not succeed, well, so much the pity. But never let it be said that we failed for want of trying; that our nerves, our courage, our conviction were not equal to the challenge that is posed.”
Of course, the respective contexts in which these words were spoken cannot be more contrasting. The first is about life in general; the second about the life and death struggle of a newly independent nation.
But they convey the same elements of conviction and believing deeply about something, focus, true grit, determination, and about doing the right thing and not giving up.
Similarly, our minds are set to ensure our culture does not fade away. We must not lose faith. We must stay focussed and keep moving forward.
Cultural Renewal
Our Peranakan culture is on the cusp of renewal and the momentum of reimagining and reinvention is what will drive the community forward and strengthen its cultural identity.
Among the 43 new members in 2020 and 37 in 2021, there are a few who are Peranakans on both sides of the family. But the larger majority have only one side of the family as Peranakan. This is the inevitable result of Peranakans increasingly marrying “outside” the community, which has been trending especially since the post-World War II years.
That so many more of the latter identify themselves as Peranakan notwithstanding is indeed heartening. It shows a gathering pride in the culture and identity. It reveals a better understanding that being Peranakan is cultural and not only about lineage.
And we are grateful that these are members who signed up on their own accord during the darkest days of the pandemic.
History in the Making
In twelve days, the community will elect a new team of leaders to steer the Peranakan Association forward. It will be formed at a time when our identity as Peranakans continues to be tested and when it is on the threshold of metamorphosing itself in a process of change.
It may also be a historic moment.
A nyonya may be elected as President of the Peranakan Association for the first time in its 122-year history. How appropriately so if this comes about. Nyonyas form 79% of the association’s total membership of 2,156 members!
And, as many of us will happily attest, nyonyas have probably been a very silent but very significant transmitter of the culture to our young. They contribute alongside their Babas who would focus on other important aspects of our culture such as ancestor worship and religious festivals, especially in olden days.
I am confident that the new team will continue to hold high the torch to keep the Peranakan culture alive.
This is my second to last letter to the association’s members and friends. You have all been encouraging and uplifting in all that we have done for the Peranakan Association since May 2018.
May God bless each of you and your loved ones. Do take care of yourselves and keep safe.
Blessings

Dear Nyonyas and Babas
This is my love letter to you dear members of The Peranakan Association Singapore and friends.
It is my last letter as President of the association as I step aside from duty and passion to resume a chapter that I had closed four years ago knowing I would return to it.
No Goodbyes
We don’t have to say goodbye.
Before blossoms leave their boughs
You know new life has sprout.
It is parting with a smile.
The white sails are raised aloft
Like lanterns in the sky.
These lines formed in my mind while I was sifting through images of delicate cherry blossoms recently. I photographed these when visiting Kyoto some 12 years ago with my wife Linda.
The air was so softly scented, to the point of fragility, and the trees were densely laden with blooms of intoxicating beauty. Our senses were completely enveloped.
It was hard to leave Kyoto then, yet part we did.
I felt the same hesitancy during my struggle to identify and persuade the right successor for the role of president. It had to be someone who believed in the association’s vision and values. There was no way we could leave without first ensuring the ship was left in good hands.
Yet leave I must, along with Nyonya Gwen Ong, our former Events Head, and Nyonya Sylvia Peh, former Accounts Advisor for Events. Both served, faithfully, with me for four years, as have many of those who have chosen to remain to support my successor. Bless them!
Gwen comforted me: “We have raised the sails and set the course.” Linda was assuring: “There will be others who share the same level of passion. Let them bring new energy to carry on.”
Fortunately, many of our members, supporters and friends who wrote to me understood my reasons for stepping aside – to let in new perspectives, to re-energize the team, and for me to spend more time with my family. They were affirmative and encouraging. I am humbled and touched.
Best of all, many of them welcomed and embraced the idea of a Nyonya to now lead the association.
Yesterday, 12 June 2022, at our virtual Annual General Meeting, Nyonya Genevieve Peggy Jeffs, was elected the first female president of The Peranakan Association Singapore in its 122-year history. It is a momentous occasion.
She was our First Vice President from 2020 to 2022.
A lifelong philanthropist, Peggy has raised funds for the underprivileged and less fortunate in Singapore and London. Her contributions to the Red Cross were recognised when she received in 2019 the Singapore Red Cross’s Outstanding Service Award from its Patron, President Halimah Yacob.
She is a direct descendant of one of the foremost late 19th and early 20th century Peranakans in Medan, Indonesia – Baba Tjong A Fie – a Kapitan Cina and a very wealthy planter and merchant in Dutch Indonesia. Her impeccable lineage includes spirited grandmother Nyonya Queeny Chang who wrote the evocative memoir, Memories of a Nyonya.
Besides Peggy, 13 other members for the 2022-24 General Committee (GC) were elected, by proxy, by 104 members of the Peranakan Association. We received 117 proxies. Unfortunately, 13 had to be invalidated for various reasons.
The new GC members in the new term are Edmond Wong (who has served in previous GCs), Anne Than, and Stella Clare Wee.
The experienced hands staying on in GC include Raymond Wong, Yip Wai Kuan, Tony Tan, Ronney Tan, Bryan Tan, Philip Yeo, Ngiam May Ling, Josephine Tan, Theresa Tan, and Elizabeth Ng.
A well-oiled team is always the sum of its parts, both internal and external. Without them, my GCs from 2018 to 2022 would not have been able to accomplish much.
This is my tribute to them.
I am truly grateful to my wonderful, loyal and experienced teammates who have decided to stay on to ensure the continuity of our mission and to the newcomers. Together, I am confident that the refreshed GC will keep the culture alive through re-imagination and reinvention.
I also appreciate our choir, The Peranakan Voices (TPV), who, while silent for two years, will surely rise to the occasion now that we can start to gather. Led longest by Baba Francis Chia, they have served steadfastly for 22 years. For so long, they showcased on stage the verve and joy of being Peranakan.
Our choir members include Angeline Kong, Adrian Kang, Agnes Ng, Anne Chia, Anthony Lee, Chan Eng Thai, Charles Chan, David Ang, Irene Ooi, Irene Poh, Irene Tai, Jessie Lee, Lionel Chia, Mabel Long, Patrick Ng, Peggy Lee, Rosy Ang, Ruby Ng, Shia Ai Lee, Shirley Kua, Sylvia Poh, Veronica Ong, and the late Peggy Chua and Mabel Lee, and other performers who were with TPV in the early years of the choir. Kamsiah Manyak Manyak!
Another group we owe much to is our Magazine Editorial Committee, led by Nyonya Linda Chee for much of the time. The team has created a publication that is very well loved and treasured by members while serving as a beautiful and faithful record of Peranakan culture.
Thank you very very much, Emeric Lau, Elisabeth Chan, Benedict Khoo, Ngiam May Ling, Bryan Tan, Joanne Tan De Zilva, Ronney Tan, Billy Tay, Anastasia Zenia, and designers John Lee and Joanne Low.
And I cannot exclude mentioning our loyal advertisers, and many writers, subject experts and illustrators in Singapore and around the world who have generously contributed their cultural writings, musings and illustrations. It would be remiss of me if I did. You are too many to name. You know who you are. You are all in The Peranakan’s advertisements and by-lines! Kamsiah Kamsiah!
Our deep appreciation also to all our working partners – Gunong Sayang Association, Peranakan Indian (Chitty Melaka) Association Singapore, The Peranakan Museum, NUS Baba House Museum, National Heritage Board, Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, National Arts Council, Heritage Conservation Centre, People’s Association, National Library Board, Genome Institute of Singapore, Genealogy Society Singapore, and our counterpart Peranakan associations in Southeast Asia and Australia.
Our heartfelt thanks, too, to all our Friends (donors) who have always had our backs, giving generously when we needed them to, and who wish to remain anonymous. You have helped us to stay in the black.
A hearty Kamsiah! to all our volunteers and members who have always stepped forward whenever we needed them to help us share and spread the culture. My apologies if sometimes we are not able to be at the venues with you to also help other than our event coordinators.
A very special thanks to Nyonya Ngiam May Ling, our Legal Advisor in GC, who would sanitise my monthly letters, and Linda who would curb my ramblings, before they are posted at the end of each month. I must not forget our Communications Head Nyonya Theresa Tan who has ensured they go out in time. I am glad my monthly letters since June 2018 have taken on a life of their own besides updating readers.
To my dear dear wife, Linda, who said she would be to me what Aunty Liz was to Uncle Kip when I first took on the responsibility of helming The Peranakan Association, a big hug. She is the steel in me and the one who has quietly toiled on through many many evenings to pull our beloved magazine together as its Editor for a good 14 years. Muaks!
And, of course, to my children Olivia, Keith and Min for I have missed catching up with them more times than I need to, and especially my grandsons Micah and Levi, who have had to plead with me sometimes to play with them instead of being at the desktop.
And last, but not least, to my Lord, who is my ever-present help and counsellor.
Until we meet again, as surely our paths will cross, please keep safe, be at peace and be kind. Linda and I wish you all and your loved ones much joy and good health.
And to our new GC led by Genevieve Peggy Jeffs (call her Peggy, lah), an abundance of God’s blessings!
Blessings

Dear Nyonyas and Babas,
Starting from this month, together with various members of the General Committee, I will update our members on the monthly happenings in the community in a short video clip titled Let’s Chakap Chakap with the President.
In this month’s video, I speak about my recent visit to our sister association in Phuket and marvel at the similarities between Thai Peranakan food and local Peranakan food that we are familiar with. Baba Ronney Tan talks about the recent event at the NUS Baba House where he co-hosted visitors from TEDx. Nyonya Theresa Tan touches on regional events, in particular, the Let’s Manik Together exhibition organised by Persatuan Peranakan Cina Melaka (PPCM) in Melaka, and an upcoming kamcheng exhibition, The Kam Cheng Cache at Seven Terraces hotel in Penang from 7 to 8 July. Nyonya Theresa adds that plans are well underway for THE PERANAKAN magazine to go digital sometime later this year.
We hope to be able to reach out to as many of you as possible with this mode of communication and hope you enjoy watching our video clips as much as we enjoy putting it together.

Dear Nyonyas and Babas
Our very unique Peranakan food has always been what sets us apart from Southeast Asia’s Chinese, Indian, Malay and Eurasian communities.
Yet our extraordinary food culture is born of a rich mix of Chinese-Malay-Indian food heritage (even European – Portuguese, Dutch and English). Somehow, this magical fusion of colours, flavours, tastes, aromas and textures has always whetted our appetite.
We are thrilled to announce that our last hard copy edition of THE PERANAKAN magazine (Issue 2/22) will celebrate, but of course, Peranakan food in all its glory! The magazine is in the mail to you. We know you will enjoy it.
I would like to thank Editor Nyonya Linda Chee and the Editorial Committee for a magnificent job and for their commitment to ensuring our culture is well documented all these years. A very special thanks to Linda for helming the magazine from 2004 to 2016 and again from 2021 to present, our longest-serving editor, and for her leadership in developing it into a precious compendium of our memories both old and new.
Our thanks also to Creative Adviser Baba John Lee and Designer Nyonya Joanne Low for the consistently beautiful design of the hard copy magazine, and illustrators Eileen Chan and Anastasia Zenia.
The current editorial committee includes Emeric Lau, Elisabeth Chan, Colin Chee, Benedict Khoo, Ngiam May Ling, Bryan Tan, Joanne Tan De-Zilva, Ronney Tan, Billy Tay and Anastasia Zenia. The General Committee and I thank them for their commitment to carry on documenting our culture in the exciting years ahead as it evolves through re-imagination and reinvention.
We also thank the people who have contributed articles and hope that they will continue to write for us. Thanks too, to our sponsors, our advertisers and others who have made this publication possible. Not forgetting all our past editors, especially Baba Peter Lee who was editor from 1995 to 2008.
A technical team has already been formed to ensure the smooth transition of THE PERANAKAN magazine from a hard copy magazine to a digital news magazine in 2023. We look forward to turning a new page as we look to new technologies in publication and cultural documentation to serve us better.
Kamsiah Manyak Manyak one and all!

Dear members
Our last hard copy issue of THE PERANAKAN magazine (Issue 2, 2022) is celebrating, but of course, Peranakan food in all its glory! It’s a 68-page bumper issue jam-packed with stories.
Read about young Lee Yuen Thien’s determination to learn a long-forgotten art so as to preserve an ancient food tradition. Just for us too, Khir Johari takes a few moments from his hectic schedule to specially write on the intoxicating origin of the keluak dish.
Eleven renowned cooks and food writers from Singapore and Malaysia share recipes, tips and their take on the future of Peranakan cuisine while seven cooks from continents far away overcome challenges to replicate our dishes. Seven babas from their 20s to 80s compose Baba Malay pantons around food and one baba counts his lucky stars to be born a baba, for obvious reasons.
In Amek Gambair, find out the family connections behind Koon Seng Road and Xilin Avenue and take a peek into the beach-easy lifestyle of Katongites before and after the War.
