Dear Nyonyas and Babas,

In this month’s video, I am joined by Nyonya Anne Than, Nyonya Yip Wai Kuan, and Nyonya Ngiam May Ling. I wish to thank Baba Benjamin Seck for letting us film in his lovely Peranakan restaurant, True Blue Cuisine and his thoughtfulness in laying out the delectable kueh kueh and tea for us.

Nyonya Anne heads up Events and hopes that members will support the exciting events we have lined up for 2023 wholeheartedly. Our last event for 2022 is our New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner Mask-querade: Mari Laojiat. https://tinyurl.com/tpas-gala2022. Do book your table if you have not done so to ring out 2022 and usher in 2023 with us!

Nyonya Kuan is our Honorary Secretary and the Advertising Manager of THE PERANAKAN magazine. While she shares that there are plenty of changes to the magazine afoot as it transforms into a digital magazine, she also fervently hopes that our loyal advertisers will continue to support us.

Nyonya May Ling is our legal advisor. She reviews legal documents and advises on laws that could potentially affect the association. As a member of the Events Sub-Committee, she helps with the planning and logistics of events. Like Nyonyas Anne and Kuan, she is also a member of the organising committee of the New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner.

We hope you enjoy watching our video clips as much as we enjoy putting them together.

Warm wishes,

Nyonya Anne Goh is a self-avowed foodie who loves to cook as much as she loves to eat. She attributes her culinary skills to her sagacious a mother-in-law who took her aside when she first joined the family and imparted these wise words to her, “If you love to eat, you must learn how to cook well so that you’ll always be able to eat well.” Nyonya Anne’s mother-in-law was also a culinary extraordinaire and it was from her that she learnt how to cook many heritage dishes and desserts. Nyonya Anne also worked hard and honed her craft by immersing herself in tomes of cookbooks. Today, she has built up an extensive repertoire of dishes which are firm favourites of her family and friends.

Calling for Baba Malay speakers for our play-reading of “Bibiks Behind Bars”
11 March 2023 (Sat) 3 – 6p.m on  at Rumah Kim Choo, 111E Coast Rd, Singapore 428801

Following the resounding success of the play-reading of “Ayer Di-Tetak Tak-Leh Putus” at NUS Baba House last October, TPAS would like to invite participants for the next play-reading session which will be of an original musical “Bibiks Behind Bars”, written and directed by Baba Richard Tan when it was first performed in 2002. The musical is about a group of ladies and their exploits caught by the law during a gambling session. A true-life episode that will tickle your heart for sure. Not to worry, even though it is a musical, you will not be required to sing.

We recognise that the use language of Baba Malay is fast diminishing, and as such, are striving to revive our unique native tongue that is bazaar Malay mingled with Chinese dialects and English. And what better way to do so than through the reading of a play in Baba Malay?

So, if you read and speak Baba Malay, or want an opportunity to practise your Baba Malay, or just want to observe, please email events@peranakan.org.sg.

Fees to cover refreshments and materials for this event are:

Member: $15 |  Non-member: $20

Registration will be on first-come first-served basis, limited to 20 places only.

Read about the play in THE PERANAKAN magazine archive www.peranakan.org.sg/magazine/2002/2002_Issue_3.pdf

The Peranakan Association Singapore (TPAS) is delighted to host a series of three Baba Malay play-reading sessions, jointly with the Peranakan Museum.

What better way to kick-start our series than with Pileh Menantu (Choosing a Daughter-in-Law), a Baba Malay play that launched Baba GT Lye’s wayang Peranakan career. The then novice actor, who played the role of the father, has over the years of honing his stage practice, became a doyen of Peranakan theatre. In 2020, Baba GT Lye was nominated by TPAS for the inaugural Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award, conferred by the National Heritage Board (NHB) to recognise outstanding practitioners of intangible cultural heritage, and received the award.

This Baba comedy of domestic foibles was commissioned by the Singapore Arts Festival in 1984, with the objective of writing for the general audience, not just Peranakans.

We recognise that the use language of Baba Malay is fast diminishing, and as such, are striving to revive our unique native tongue that is bazaar Malay mingled with Chinese dialects and English. Let’s Chakap Chakap with the President (Mar 2023)

Dear Nyonyas and Babas,

In this month’s video, I am joined by Jackie Yoong, Senior Curator, Fashion and Textiles, Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum, Ratianah Tahir, kebaya designer from Kebaya by Ratianah and Baba Raymond Wong, kebaya designer from Rumah Kim Choo and Assistant Honorary Treasurer of the General Committee of The Peranakan Association Singapore (TPAS) at the resplendent Peranakan Museum (TPM) which reopened last month after four years of renovations.

I first invite Jackie to share what is new at TPM; in summary, there are now nine permanent galleries which cover three main themes: “Origins”, “Home” and “Style”. She focuses on the “Style” gallery which showcases, among others, textiles and jewellery. What the gallery hopes to convey is firstly, the hybrid, diverse and innovative nature of Peranakan fashion and how it is rooted in the port cities of Southeast Asia. The gallery also charts the evolution of Peranakan fashion from the mid 19th century up to the 1950s, which is the style of the sarong kebaya that has endured up till today. Secondly, Peranakan fashion is more than just the sarong kebaya; it also encompasses accessories, collars, belts and bags. Thirdly, the gallery also showcases the contemporary expression of the sarong kebaya.

Jackie then proceeds to request Baba Raymond to share the creative processes behind the design of the outfits for Ivan Heng in his role as Emily during the performance of the play “Emily of Emerald Hill” in 2019.

Baba Raymond recounts humbly that he has been designing kebayas since 2004. When Ivan first approached him to design the wardrobe for Emily, he barely knew the character, having only studied the play briefly in secondary school. In order to come up with the most appropriate wardrobe for Emily, he read the play several times over and did as much research as he could. The first kebaya he made, which was worn by Emily when she first married into the family, was adorned with peonies and phoenixes which are rich with symbolism in Peranakan culture. The second outfit was the baju panjang which Emily wore when she was pregnant with her first child up to when he was a toddler. He deliberately designed a loose-fitting, casual outfit which would allow Emily to move around with ease while caring for her child and seeing to the household chores.

The third outfit, a kebaya, was worn by Emily in her old age, contained muted colours to reflect her maturity. He picked turquoise, a colour which is favoured by Peranakans and used flowers which were pale to the point of being almost white. Instead of the usual peonies, he used chrysanthemums for two reasons: chrysanthemums bloom in the late autumn, early winter and represent resilience, making them an appropriate symbol for Emily who increased in fortitude with age. While understated compared to the flamboyant peony, the chrysanthemum is not without a place in Peranakan culture as it is also featured in Peranakan textiles and porcelain of significance. The two kebayas are now on display at TPM.

Prompted by Jackie, Baba Raymond goes on to share that he has been teaching the craft of kebaya-making, from the cutting of the fabric to the embroidery to the fitting process, to students at La Salle since 2011, and is hopeful that new kebaya designers will emerge in the near future. He adds that he derives inspiration from his students who tell him what it is that young people want in a kebaya.

You may wish to note that a kebaya designed by Ratianah for me is also on display at TPM. Ratinah shares that she selected this particular fabric which is adorned with phoenixes and chrysanthemums in a multitude of colours and outlined in gold thread as she thought its exuberance matched my vivacious personality. I have always had a penchant for large, colourful flowers so when I first clapped eyes on this piece of fabric, I instantly knew that it was perfect for the design I had in mind for the kebaya. Ratianah’s hope is that youngsters will be bold enough to wear different iterations of the kebaya yet traditional enough to maintain its classic silhouette. Like her, I also feel that the kebaya may be worn by anyone regardless of race and background.

Jackie seizes the opportunity to thank TPAS for putting up “In the Mood for Kebaya” as part of the festivities for the reopening of TPM. I think it is safe to say that everyone involved had good fun even though it was hard work, all in the name of celebrating the kebaya!

Lastly, I wish to implore everyone to consider donating or loaning their belongings to TPM for display as it is only through the sharing of our heritage can it be preserved for future generations.

Before I sign off, I wish to highlight that due to overwhelming interest in the Kebaya Design Workshop for children that just took place, TPAS will be organising a Kebaya Design Workshop for young adults in the near future. Please do visit our Facebook page regularly for updates on this event.

I hope that after watching this video, you will be enticed to dash down to TPM to take in the thoughtful and well-curated exhibits.

Warm wishes,

In this month’s video, I am joined by Baba Philip Yeo of the General Committee and the team from the National Heritage Board (NHB) comprising Melissa Tan, Director, Heritage Policy & Research, Mingmin Cao, Assistant Manager, Heritage Policy & Research and Sathashivam Logaraj, Assistant Manager, Heritage Policy & Research.

In March 2023, Singapore, together with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, submitted a multinational nomination to inscribe the kebaya to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In this video, the NHB team shares the rationale for the nomination, the detailed nomination process and thanks The Peranakan Association Singapore (TPAS) and members of the community for their support in the process.

To find out more about the multinational nomination of the kebaya, watch the official 10-minute Multinational Nomination of Kebaya video and Video of Consent here: https://www.nhb.gov.sg/what-we-do/our-work/sector-development/unesco/kebaya

While we await the nomination results which are expected to be released in 2024, NHB has planned a series of programmes, the major one being the travelling exhibition “Love, Kebaya” to highlight the significance of the kebaya as a form of shared cultural heritage across Southeast Asia. After the first exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore, this travelling exhibition is now at the Visitor Services Centre at Gardens by the Bay till 14 May 2023. From 16 – 24 May 2023, it will travel to the Festive Market at Our Tampines Hub.

More information about the exhibition can be found here: https://www.gardensbythebay.com.sg/en/things-to-do/calendar-of-events/love-kebaya.html

Baba Philip Yeo is pleased to announce our first post-pandemic Malam Jolly dinner will be held on 14 July 2023 (Friday) at Summer Garden at SAFRA Mount Faber. Baba Philip is excited about the Friday Nite Fever theme and encourages members to purchase a ticket and dress up to the theme for a night of party. Malam Jolly is TPAS’ annual dinner for members to get together, so we have kept the ticket price affordable for members at $88/pax. As there are limited tables, do book your tickets early at www.tinyurl.com/MalamJolly2023.

We hope you enjoy watching our video clips as much as we enjoy putting them together.
